.s. consulate in benghazi libya in 2012. speaker john boehner is forming a select committee to investigate disclosures this week that show the add min strigs misled the american people. mark al enter the in our washington bureau with more. >> reporter: good morning. speaker john boehner as recently as last month saw no reason for such a high-profile committee, but changed his mind this week and announced it just hours after a different house committee subpoenaed secretary of state john kerry to testify. the rapid fire kerry subpoena in special select committee announcement on friday capped off a week that saw the release of a previously unseen white house e-mail written by deputy national security adviser ben rhodes. it was sent in the days after the 2012 attack which killed u.s. ambassador chris stephens and three other americans. republicans call the e-mail a smoking gun that shows the white house wrongly blamed an anti-islamic video, putting, they say, political damage control over the facts. >> none of them think it's a video. none of them. the military the ci

the health care act. the situation in libya was a tinderbox. those brave people who volunteer to work for our safety and our security understood this. it is not the same thing as i'm not a crook. it is not the same thing as aluminum tubes and mushroom clouds. this is always a risk area when people go into a country to try to make peace or solve problems in a dysfunctional government and people are rebelling. yes, that film did have something do with it and there was coverage of it. it was two weeks in the new york times and the washington post that showed that it was already a very dangerous situation and this horrific, and moronic film that came out that degraded their god and their religion was all it took for them -- from situation to explode. i think it is time for us to move on and stop with the distractions and all of the division because that is what this party always does. they point the finger at the women, fear the enemy. upon the finger at the minority, they're are the enemy. they want to divide us. we have to start thinking for ourselves and realize that if we don't come together

critical of president obama's foreign policy, particularly in libya because africa daffy fell, -- after qadhafi fell, we did nothing to secure the country. senator mccain and a couple of others and myself, senator rubio, went in 2011 to libya and we said in an op-ed piece if we don't get rid of these militias, libya is going to become a safe haven for terrorists. and you have got to understand this about the benghazi consulate -- it had been previously attacked in april of 2012. the british ambassador had been attacked in june of 2012. the british closed their consulate. the red cross closed their office because they had been attacked, and we have got email traffic coming from libya to washington at the state department level saying in august -- saying on august 16, we cannot secure the benghazi consulate from a coordinated terrorist attack, and al qaeda flags are flying all over benghazi. what they did not want you to know was the consulate in benghazi was very unsecured, everyone else had left the town and that the numerous requests for security enhancements going back for months had

, instability, and a new government, successes and failures of u.s. intervention in libya. the oversight committee's mission statement is that we exist to secure two fundamental principles. first, americans have a right to know that the money washington takes from them is well spent, and, second, americans deserve an efficient, effective government that works for them. our solemn responsibility is to hold government accountable to taxpayers. it is our job to work in partnership with citizen watchdogs to deliver the facts to the american people and bring reform to the federal bureaucracy. this is our mission. today the oversight committee convenes a fourth hearing related to the security situation in libya before, during, and after the september 11 terrorist attack which claimed the lives of four americans. the committee has previously brought forward important witnesses who offered new and enlightening testimony on security failures that forced the administration to walk back false claims about the nature of the terrorist attack. testimony of previous witnesses identified key questions i

, as we just confirmed, for the effort to get back libya on its feet, one of the things that has been encountered in the investigation of the state department conduct in libya is the overwhelming normalization, whether it be the attempt to reduce security personnel at diplomatic facilities or so-called normal levels or attempt to view the government of libya as normal host nation partners capable of providing protection like my colleague from texas just talked about. did you encounter this normalization philosophy during operation odyssey guard? >> yes, sir, i did. >> could you elaborate a little bit on that? >> yes. or instance, there was a desire to create a new normal within , which wasnment basically redefining of what i would consider sub-optimal. >> would you consider it hostile? >> yes, sir. ahead, continue. >> the hostile environment we were dealing with, our interaction certainly was not with our interagency counterparts, but the low profile by the american government and the u.s. military in that environment at the time, we were not deploying our forces. there was no marine

objection. mr. mccain: mr. president, 19 months ago, a terrible thing happened in benghazi, libya. four brave americans were murdered, and the issue has never been not only resolved but as each of the last 19 months has ensued, the issue of how and under what circumstances this heinous crime was committed continues, and the senator from south carolina and i, the senator from new hampshire and some others have vowed we will never give up on this issue until the truth is known and the people who perpetrated it are brought to justice. we have seen another page turn in this chapter of cover-up and obfuscation by this administration by the belated 19 months later release of the following emails. first one we will not pay much attention to. this is from the benjamin rhodes, who is supposed to be the public relations -- public affairs office for the national security council. in fact, he is obviously the propaganda organ. the purpose, the goals as he states them to underscore that these protests are rooted in an internet video and not a broader failure of policy. i tell my colleagues that that

straight day. lawmakers outraged over newly released e-mails over the take at the compound in libya. four americans including ambassador stevens were killed in that attack. you may remember susan rice then the ambassador got a lot of heat for blaming the protest on an anti-muslim movie. on e-mails, top white house aide ben rhodes showed the white house made a hard push for rice to relay that account which later proved to be inaccurate. one e-mail states one of the goals for the prep session with rice's quote to prove these are rooted in an internet video and not a broader failure of policy. our jim acosta asked the white house a moment ago, jay carney about the controversy. >> in 2012 the president said i'm happy to provide information about the controversy that congress wants and we have provided everything we have. >> right. >> that e-mail was not provided. >> have you read the e-mail, jim? >> yes. >> here's the thing. back aeering ago now roughly, when republicans on capitol hill were feeding information to reporters about what was in a bunch of e-mails that had been given to congressi

, on what happened over in libya, in benghazi on that night where four brave americans died. well, now we know that there was a coverup as well because they had redacted, they crossed out all the stuff. then finally we got to see it. yesterday the white house press corps had it up to here. they realized they had been lied to for over a year and it even came down to where jay carney, who apparently is not paid enough because he tries to do a good job for the administration, he said that the benghazi memo that they prepared for susan rice before she went out on the sundayç shows, it wasn't about benghazi, even though at the top of it it said "benghazi." here's jonathan carl. >> you knew full well what susan rice primarily was going to be asked about was the attack, terrorist attack on a u.s. consolate. ambassador rice went on those shows and said the attack in benghazi was rooted in protests over an internet video. we now know that was not true. >> i would point you to what mike morrell said repeatedly in testimony about the?x(áqpáion of the talking points. >> morrell said last month, w

. double whammy for the president. he had a military action in libya, would thank would show chaos resulted and show terrorists are acting against and killing americans and he says al-qaeda is on the up and bin laden is done. he also said let's reinforce the president's strength on challenges. this is saturday night, everybody important in the administration is cced on this. senator kelly ayotte, who has been all over it, she said this about what this all means. >> we always said r did the video reference come from? now we know it came from the white house. the president is claiming he had been a good foreign policy president, that he had al-qaeda on the run. the other thing in this set of e-mail here that's very troubling is this reference to make sure you mention that al-qaeda has been destroyed. then you saw ambassador rice on every single sunday show saying al-qaeda has been decimated. >> so that e-mail was from ben rhodes who was the deputy national security advisor and maybe -- if you're going think, if it's not the white house trying to be political, which is it clearly looks like w
